退休教師格蘭特（戈登?平森特 飾）與妻子菲奧娜（朱莉?克里斯蒂 飾）相依相守44年，兩人一直過著平靜而舒適的生活。可是優雅高貴的菲奧娜患上了老人癡呆癥，她的記憶力開始衰退，更日漸嚴重。菲奧娜決定入住療養院，深愛妻子的格蘭特只好妥協。從未分開過的兩人需要在菲奧娜住院后的一個月內不能見面。
當格蘭特再次出現在菲奧娜面前，發現她仿佛忘記格蘭特，并且與療養院其中一名病人奧布里相愛了。面對這個突如其來的改變，令格蘭特不知所措。就在這時候，奧布里離開了療養院，菲奧娜對此感到十分不安。
格蘭特找到了奧布里的妻子，說服她把丈夫送回療養院，可是奧布里的妻子瑪麗安不愿因高昂住院費用以致失去了現今的房子，房子是她的一切。
但最后瑪麗安還是被格蘭特的真情打動，不忍妻子心疼的格蘭特把奧布里重新帶回療養院，菲奧娜的反應卻使格蘭特驚訝極了……
